2014 January Commandant's Message

As we start the New Year, may all Members of the Utah Dixie Detachment #1270 be mindful of the many good things that were completed during 2013.  While we have every reason to acknowledge that this Detachment's performance is second to none, notwithstanding, we still seek ways and means to enhance our memberships and increase participation in a few areas.

At the December Staff Meeting it was discussed that, with the influx of new members, we need to establish a system whereby Marines and Corpsmen are properly introduced to the Detachment and are given sufficient time to inform the Detachment of their personal abilities and past experiences.  While such a procedure was previously in effect in the past, it slowly became overshadowed with the invited Guest Speakers Program, a Program that many enjoyed and would like to continue.

Therefore, in order to ensure that all members are provided the opportunity to become better acquainted with one another and not completely do away with the Guest Speakers Program, it is recommended that the following program be adopted.  The Guest Speakers Program will be reserved for the months of JANUARY, MARCH, MAY, JULY, and SEPTEMBER.  This Program will be under the direction of the Judge Advocate.

During the months of FEBRUARY, APRIL, JUNE, AUGUST AND OCTOBER, the Adjutant will assign one Fire Team, each month, to provide background information (military and civilian accomplishments) on their individual members.  It is acknowledged that there may be insufficient time allotted to permit all members of a designated fire team to speak on the same day.  It will be up to the Fire Team Leader to stay within the allotted time of 30 minutes.  Members not given the time to speak will be afforded the opportunity in future assignments.  This program will be under the direction of the Junior Vice Commandant.

It is acknowledged that the months of November and December were not included above.  It is recommended that (1) the month of November be reserved for the annual "Free Breakfast For All Marines" and (2) recognizing that the month of December is extremely busy month supporting Toys For Tots and other activities, this month be held open.  Programs for both months will be the responsibility of the Junior Vice Commandant.

Since not all members were in attendance at the December meeting, they are not aware of the Awards Program that was conducted for deserving Marines of our Detachment. The following Marines were awarded Medals as indicated:

⊳  Dennis Cory, Bill Toole and Carl Kulyk received the Detachment Commandant Medal.

⊳  Clyde Johnston, Bill Toole and Carl Kulyk received the Detachment Staff Elected Silver Medal.

⊳  Clyde Johnston received the Detachment Marine of the Year Medal.

These awards were presented in recognition of their outstanding individual contribution to the betterment of the Detachment.

May the year 2014 be the best year yet for all Detachment members and their loved ones.

D’Arcy Grisier, Commandant
