April 2014 Commandant's Corner

At the last staff meeting (27 Mar) we were informed of the members and their spouses who were ill and/or hospitalized.  Mike Ernsten's cancer is currently in remission.  Shirley Olsen (Ken's wife) is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.  As many know she is a true trooper and we pray that she will overcome this illness.  We all were surprised that Bill Toole was hospitalized for two days due to an intestinal disorder.  Understand he is out and about (southern term) now.

Some may wonder why I started my comments with the medical welfare report for the members and their spouses.  It is my hope to enlighten you to our responsibilities as Marines to be concerned for the welfare and happiness of our fellow Detachment members.  The establishment of the Fire Team concept has helped by contributing up-to-date information on at least a monthly basis.  We appreciate the fact that the majority of the Fire Team Leaders do not wait until the end of the month to report, matters not considered routine, as soon as possible.

Some in the Detachment may not know that Roger and Carolyn Clawson will be departing soon on another Mission for their Church.  Roger has been the Detachment's representative at the Southern Utah Veterans Coalition which meets monthly to discuss and coordinate matters pertaining to all veterans and their families within Southern Utah.  We have asked Dave Waters to replace Roger.  Dave has accepted this assignment effective 1 April.

Scott Gordon has accepted the assignment as Assistant to the Paymaster (Jim Haney) effective 1 April.  Checking the Detachment's blog you will see that April is a busy month; especially on the 12th of April: Dixie Detachment meeting held at the Elks.  Breakfast starts at 0830. Meeting starts at 0900.

A Veterans Information Convention will be held at the Abbey Inn during the hours 0900 – 1800. Devil Pups yard sale will be held in the parking lot of Ace Hardware on Bluff Street.  Deposit items 0730.  Start selling 0800.  Bill Toole, Steve Handy and William Spinney are assigned to monitor the yard sale.

I would be remiss if I did not comment on the Detachment's 7th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament which is currently scheduled for Saturday June 14, 2014 at the Sky Mountain Golf Course.  The Golf Tournament is being handled by our Sergeant at Arms, Larry Mineer. The committee has had two meetings and everything is on course.  Additional information is contained in this Newsletter.

Bruce Solomon has been assigned by the Mayor of St George to Chair the Veterans Relations Committee for the City.  It is nice to have a Marine on this Committee.  One of the first major steps taken by the Committee was the establishment of a Veteran's Justice Court.  A BIG FIRST STEP.

According to the Detachment's Constitution and By-Laws, officers of the Detachment shall be nominated annually at the April meeting and elected and installed at the May meeting to take effect contemporaneously with the Utah Department date of 1 June each year.  Mercy Wright has been assigned as the Head of the Nominating Committee.

Let your Fire Team Leader know if you are available to stand guard
at the Air Show on 26 and 27 July 2014.  The hours are from 0700 - 1800.  If you chose to do this you will be needed for both days.  Also know that you will have to submit to a background check.  You can bring a camp/patio chair to sit on.  Your job will be to keep people from the airplanes and flight lines. You get to watch the show for free, and last year a lunch was included.

Air Force JROTC Golf Tournament

The Air Force JROTC is holding a 2nd annual Golf Tournament on March 22nd.  They will have new and exciting additions to the tournament this year, along with some really good prizes and drawings.

The Detachment has already made a donation to this Dixie High program, but if you would like to play on a team ($150), enter a team of four ($500), sponsor a Cadet team ($500) or sponsor a hole ($350), please contact Linda Elwell, Co-President of the Booster Club at (435) 673-1718.

March 2014 Commandant's Message

As I reflect on the February meeting, I do so with great appreciation for the efforts put forth by all members of the Detachment in welcoming new members into the Detachment. It was the first time (since I have been Commandant) that we were successful in performing the swearing in ceremony "by the book." If you want to know what effect the ceremony had on the newest members - just ask them.

The month of March should be a very challenging month for all of us. It is the month that future plans will be discussed and arrangement made for the Detachment's biggest fund raiser, namely: The MARINE CORPS LEAGUE GOLF TOURNAMENT. We believe it will again be held in the month of June. The five figure bank balance we currently enjoy is in large part the direct result of increasing the yield from the golf tournament. We all receive the "Thank yous" from worthy organizations who receive our donations. We will have a list of "tasks" required at the March Detachment Meeting. Be prepared to volunteer and support the Detachment in once again having a successful and financially rewarding event.

It was brought to my attention that Double Amputee Marine Veteran Rob Jones will be biking our way, expecting to arrive in Cedar City 3 March. Rob began his epic journey 14 October 2013, starting his ride in Bar Harbor, Maine and has already cycled over 3500 miles. He recently crossed the Continental Divide, right over the Rockies in the dead of winter on snow covered highways. He has cycled through ME, NH, MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DC, VA, KY, IL, MO, CO and is in UT and continuing west across country, ending in CA. He cycles on average 35 miles a day, and his brother Steve follows behind in a support truck.

Rob's valiant story is one of bravery and determination. After surviving the explosion, the combat engineer recovered and fought back. Awarded a Purple Heart, and honorably discharged in 2011, Rob took up rowing and won a slot in the 2012 Paralympics in London. He brought home a Bronze Medal, instilling hope and inspiration in others for their own future. His decision to cycle over 5000 miles stems from his unwavering determination to push the boundaries of possibility. Nothing is deterring him from reaching the California coastline, working to raise awareness and funds for the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes, Semper Fi Fund, and Ride2Recovery charities that help injured soldiers/Marines who face challenges like his. Shall we help him?
Semper Fi!
