Wreaths Across America T-Shirts

Per several requests, I have launched an ordering campaign for those who would like to WEAR their support for this year's Wreaths Across America event. Kindly share this with your membership, friends and neighbors who are planning to come to this event as volunteers to lay wreaths on the graves of local veterans buried at Tonaquint and St. George Cemeteries.

6 Choices - Unisex Long Sleeve, Women's Tailored Fit Long Sleeve, and Hoodies.  Color Choices:  Red or Green.

Available in a wide range of sizes.  Youth sizes also available - long sleeve t-shirt only.

NOTES:

To keep the prices down and also guarantee delivery by Dec. 9, I had to agree to a bulk ship method to my home address which means we cannot offer you a direct-ship option.  We will make arrangements for individual deliveries once the items have arrived.

The order deadline is 11/21/2022.  Once the campaign closes, add-on ordering will not be permitted.

We must order at least 34 items in total to go to print. As of now, a total of 16 have been ordered so I'm quite confident we will meet the minimum.

Ordering is super easy.....click the link provided below.

TFT Volunteers Needed

2021 TFT Boxes

Last week I published a need for a few volunteers for a BBQ in Ivins. We still need a few volunteers. The correct BBQ date is this Friday, Nov 11. The address is 337 E 1100 S. Park on 1060 S as they typically close off 1100 S. The event is from 2-7ish. If you can spare a couple of hours and want to support for Toys for Tots and the family and eat a hotdog, pop over. We can always put you to work! (P.S. bring a chair).

Warehouse organization is also coming along. There are still toys to be unboxed and sorted. If you can spare a couple of hours in the next couple of days or this weekend, we could always use the help.

REMINDER: The space is not heated (or air conditioned). Dress accordingly. If it's 35 outside, it's likely 35 inside.

If you are a "Zone Captain" for boxes, the boxes are at the "warehouse" and can be picked up anytime. They would like to get them out into the community this weekend. Please grab your boxes as soon as you can.

That's all for now. Thank you for all your help. The campaign is really coming along!!!

Monthly Meetings Will Meet at American Legion Building

Today's meeting (14 May 2022) at the Elks Lodge was our last one there.  From this day forward we will be meeting at the American Legion Post 90 building, also known as the St. George Community Building, located behind the St. George Senior Center at 245 N 200 W.  It's a great facility with  plenty of room.  We will have to set up and take down tables if we use them, and chairs, but that's why we get the hall for free!

The June 4 meeting is also the Department of Utah's annual conference, so plan to be there from 0830 to 2:30 p.m.  We will have lunch during the meeting - probably pizzas.

The next detachment meeting will be June 4th.  That's because the detachment golf tournament falls on our normal meeting date.

2022 Annual Golf Tournament

The mission statement for the Marine Corps League speaks about assisting Marines and veterans from all branches of the military.  When that backing is requested, it often comes in the form of dollars OR projects that require dollars to make them happen.  To that end Utah Dixie Detachment #1270, Marine Corps League, sponsors an annual golf tournament which is our major source of revenue for the 12 months following the event.  We are a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and the distribution of funds is strictly guarded by our Board of Trustees.

This year’s golf tourney will be held June 11 at the Bloomington Country Club, St. George.  This is a private course that most golfers around here never get to test their skills at.  There is a shotgun start at 8 am and the format is a Scramble.  All levels of men and women join us for this event - the main reason to have fun while helping us raise some much-needed cash for our charities.  Like what you ask?  Here’s a few:

Switchpoint Veterans Program St. George

Elk’s Lodge Veterans Program St. George

Marines Helping Marines Washington county

Marine Corps and Navy Corpsmen Scholarships Dixie State University

Devil Pups Incorporated

Toys For Tots Washington, Iron and Kane County

Sun River Veterans Honor Park (flag replacement program)

St. George Gold Star Family Monument Ancestor Square

Wounded Warrior Barracks Salt Lake City

Veterans Missing in America – Utah Division

Wreaths Across America St. George

Currently, we have some openings for players in the upcoming tournament.  The cost is only $125 per person which includes 18 holes of golf, a cart for every 2 people, and a fantastic lunch.  There are prizes to win and silent auction items to bid on.

It’s very easy to sign up and pay for play on our website: www.mcl1270.org Or, feel free to call one of us if you have questions.  Our chairperson is Michelle Gregory 435 210-1016; Pat Lisi 435 215-3090.  We also have T-box signs for sale at $100 which includes the design and printing.  Please call our T-sign Chairman to purchase one for your business: Tom Uber  734 516-6559.  And, if you are a vendor who wants to put up a tent at one of the T-boxes to advertise your products, you can do so for just $400.

There are hundreds of veterans in Washington County who need our help.  Please join us June 11th as we play while we work to service these men and women who served us so valiantly.  Thank you and Semper Fidelis.

Marine Corps Art Exhibit Feb 12-Apr 30

Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018 is a traveling art exhibition from the National Museum of the Marine Corps and is sponsored by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. This exhibit includes 36 works by 15 combat artists, portraying Marine Corps service from the mid-1970s through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Marine Corps Combat Art Program relies on talented Marines and civilians to document the ongoing missions of the Corps. The guidance they get is simple: “Go to war and do art.” The 34 works on canvas and 2 sculptures speak to the experiences of the artists, most of whom were deployed around the globe. The show is divided among three themes: “Every Clime and Place,” which illustrates the nation’s global force in readiness—able to respond rapidly to any location; “No Better Friend, No worse Enemy,” which portrays Marines capable of fighting the enemy but also delivering aid to those in need; and “The Price,” which provides a glimpse of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform and their families make.

“The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is pleased to sponsor this exhibition,” said Major General James W. Lukeman, USMC (ret.), who serves as President and CEO of MCHF. “Not everyone is able to travel to the National Museum of the Marine Corps to see its treasures. This program enables us to share Marine Corps history—and its art—more widely.”

Upcoming Events

The traveling combat art exhibition will be on display at the St. George Art Museum from February 12 through April 30th.  The collection includes 36 works of art from the Combat Art Gallery of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.  Set aside some time to see this amazing display.

March 26 at 1100 is the dedication ceremony for the Gold Star Family monument recently constructed in Ancestor Square, St. George.  Plan to attend what is bound to be a very moving event.  90 gold star families are expected from around the county and state.

April 20 -23 is the Washington County Fair.  This year's honor to veterans will be about Vietnam, and the dedication ceremony is on April 21 at 1000. We will be discussing renting a booth space at the next staff meeting, so we may be calling on you to volunteer some time at the fair representing the Detachment in a recruitment drive.

There is a First Responder Recognition celebration planned for May 14 at the Dixie State University commons.  Preceding it is a parade Friday night the 13th. Each military organization like ours is expected to provide 2 members to help organize this event.  More information on all of these programs will come your way as I receive it.

Remembering Gunny Massey

The Marine who saved Christmas for thousands of Southern Utah Children was remembered with a Memorial Bench.  By William G. Fortune, Public Relations Officer, Utah Dixie Detachment #1270

Jan 2, 2022–– Marines, friends, family gathered today near the final resting place of Gunnery Sgt. Rick Massey for the dedication ceremony.  Known as the Marine who saved Christmas for thousands of Southern Utah Children during the past 18 years his friends, family and Marine detachment members felt he deserved a big thank you for his tireless effort as the Area Coordinator for the Toys For Tots organization.

The bench started out at a granite quarry and Marines who worked there made a special effort to pick the granite, cut and finished the bench with care because it was to honor a fellow Marine. Then the Utah Monument Company applied the finishing touches and cost donations. Even the Tonaquint Cemetery staff put in an extra effort for the event, like lowering all the Service flags in the area to half Staff.

People were welcomed by Pat Lisi, Detachment Commandant, and the National Anthem was sung by Ivie Forsyth, a local theatrical and music talent. A firing detail from the Detachment fired a rifle salute and taps was sounded and a moment of silence was called for. The Marine Hymn was played by John Mayer, the detachment piper.

Steve Handy, fellow detachment member and second assistant to Rick, as the area coordinator of Toys for Tots for many of those 18 years shared his memories.

Then it was time for the “ceremonial toast” to Rick with his favorite drink (Pepsi, a piece of ice and a cherry in a shot glass).  To accomplish this, shot glasses were prepared with a Marine Corps emblem and filled accordingly. Everyone present was invited to participate and keep the glass as a memory.

Several of Rick's coworkers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Department joined in with the toast. Other service members, like Danny Greathouse, president of the Vietnam Veterans Association, also joined in on the toast. Danny had volunteered to help with the Toys For Tots effort the last several years.

A traditional phrase used in memory of the Marine's sea going service was used to close the event. “…Fair Winds and following Seas…Gunny, you will be missed…”

Jan 2,2022––Marines of Utah Dixie Detachment 1270 and friends gathered to dedicate a Memorial Bench and drink a “Toast” to the Gunny.
