11 Jun 2015 - Ivins Nursing Home Acquarium Dedication

The Southern Utah Veterans Home (SUVH) will host a community dedication ceremony on Thursday, June 11, 2015, with ribbon cutting, in recognition and appreciation of the local Marine Corps Detachment #1270 for their generous donation of a salt water aquarium.  The dedication ceremony will be held on site at their Ivins campus at 2:00 p.m., said Jaqueline Peterson, State Officer, Utah Department of Veterans & Military Affairs.  “I personally would like to thank the Marine Corps League for their generous donation of the salt water aquarium.  The residents of the Southern Utah Veterans Home enjoy spending hours watching the fish and are so thankful to the Marine Corps League for this wonderful donation.”

The new aquarium is a beautiful addition to the two-year-old state of the art facility.  “We strive to create a welcoming, home-like setting for our residents and visitors, and now, thanks to the Marine Corps League, we are able to enhance our campus atmosphere for the pleasure and enjoyment of our resident family members,” explained Jerry Olson, Administrator, Southern Utah Veterans Home.

For Marines possessing the ceremonial uniform (white shirt/ blue trousers) please wear this uniform.  For Marines who do not possess the ceremonial uniform, the red shirt/black trousers is acceptable.  For Marines who at this time have neither uniform, your attendance is still desired.

Please join the Southern Utah Veterans Home for this community celebration and an opportunity to tour the campus.

Honor Flight Send Off a Success - Please return for Welcome Home

Message from Commandant Grisier:

We had nine Marines and one photographer (Michelle, wife of Gene Gregory) show up for the Honor Flight send-off.  Thank you to all who were there for the send-off.  As you know they are scheduled to return Saturday evening at approximately 2100.  I ask that you return and I encourage those who could not make it to the departure to join with the happy crowd in the welcoming back.  Watch for an e-mail from Larry Mineer because he will get advance notice of the arrival time from one of the event organizers - this should keep everyone from standing around waiting if the flight is delayed.

As a matter of information, Mayor Pike was also there for the send-off.  The mayor shook hands with all Marines and had his picture taken 2-3 times right in the middle of all the Marines.

While each passenger was happy to see us, none had happier faces than MCL members, Audre and Ken.  With tears in their eyes they thanked us all.  While the review line may not have been as straight as Marines would like, nevertheless, it was formed and salutes were rendered, as the passengers boarded the bus heading for Las Vegas.

4 Jun 2015 - Honor Flight

As you know, departure for the Honor Flight is from the Dixie Center (Convention Center Drive) this Thursday (4 June) between 0600 and 0615.  This means we would have to be there by 0545.  As you may recall, we "piped" (w/o whistles) them aboard the bus in the past.  No rifles; just hand salute.

Honor Flight participants walked between two lines of Marines formed in front of the bus door.  We did this before, and it was well received.  This time we will do it for two of our own - Audre Wells and Ken Brown.

Recommended uniform is red shirts, black trousers, MCL jackets.  I hope to have at least 15 in attendance.

The Honor Flight is scheduled to return to the Dixie Center Saturday 6 June at 2100.  Hopefully, all Marines will be available to greet them on their return.  Dress same as Thursday. Unfortunately, I will be in SLC attending the Department convention.

June Commandant's Corner

As we reflect on the past month (May), I believe we all can agree it was a busy month, especially for the Golf Committee, chaired by Carl Kulyk.  His committee overcame many obstacles, some seen, some not.  I believe we had the largest group of golfers to attend a Detachment Golf Tournament.  Carl has agreed that to accomplish what he and his Committee did required many hands.  I would be remiss if I did not extend a special acknowledgment and congratulations (on Carl's behalf), to the number of members, as well as to their wives and husbands who went out of their way to lend a hand in assisting, wherever possible, in the this great effort.

We have other Committees who are now actively engaged, namely, the Birthday Ball Committee, Awards Committee and the Donation Committee.

The Birthday Ball Committee is chaired by Pat Lisi and they have selected a date to hold the Ball.  Guess what date it is – you are correct November 10^th.  As we get closer to that date, additional Marines will have to step up and assist when called upon.

Les Covey is the Chairman for the Awards Committee.  They have been charged with ensuring that ALL members are in receipt of their Ribbons and Medals that they have earned while being in the Marine Corps League and have yet to receive them.  Marines are requested to complete the form that has been made available to them by the Committee.  For those that have not received the form, please check with Larry Mineer.

Gene Gregory chairs the Donation Committee.  His committee is quite pleased that they have now sponsored their first Scholarship recipient.  The award is scheduled to be presented at the July Detachment meeting.  Hopefully, in the near future the Detachment will be able to sponsor additional Scholarships for worthy candidates.

The Detachment also participated in observing Memorial Day at the Sun River’s Honor Park.  I received word from Larry that he was pleased with the turn out and participation.  Although he did mention there were one or two individuals in the ceremony who were a little slack.  Must have been those “other” guys.

I plan on representing Dixie Detachment #1270 at the Utah Department Marine Corps League Meeting which is being held in Sandy, Utah during the weekend of 6 -7 June.  Any and all Detachment members are invited to attend.  It is only a few hundred miles away.  Give me a call if you are interested.
