11-15 Mar 2015 - Vietnam Wall Guard Duty

Marines:

The Wall will arrive in St George on Wednesday 11 March 2014.  It will be set up at the Zion Harley-Davidson facility located at 2345 No. North Coral Canyon Blvd., Washington, Utah.  (Exit 16.)

The Vietnam Veterans came up with the cash and  (along with Zion Harley-Davidson) were responsible for making the arrangements for the Wall to spend five days in Southern Utah.

As in the past, Dixie Detachment #1270 has agreed to provide security during the dark hours.  Our Web Sergeant has prepared a sign-up sheet in two-hour assignments.  There are 92 members in the Dixie Detachment and 24 slots to fill.  We would prefer to see each two-hour relief of the guard filled by two Marines.  We will leave it up to the Fire Team leaders to see that we have two individuals sign up for each two-hour relief of the guard.  In order to spread the admin load, there obviously is a requirement for doubling of the guard in the dark hours.

As Donna will explain to the new members, you can sign up online.  By the way, if you really want to reminisce, sign up for a four-hour assignment.  (It might let you recall the listening post assignments in Korea and Vietnam.) Click this link for a sign-up sheet:
SIGN UP SCHEDULE

IMPORTANT:  Type your name in a slot and add your phone number in the appropriate space.  Examples have been entered to show you how it's done.  Just close out of the form when you have signed up.  The information you typed will remain and everyone can see how many slots are left.  If you have trouble with this process, please e-mail Donna (dtoole [at] sunrivertoday [dot] com) and she will put your name in the slot you request.

The first public viewing of the Vietnam Wall begins at 1100 Wednesday, 11 Mar 2015 with closing ceremonies on Saturday 1800.

Nursing Home Aquarium

We have been informed by Justin Hodge of Fish & Frags that the construction of the salt water aquarium is 100% complete and he is in the process of scheduling the installation. His schedule is very full and he also has to coordinate with the assistance of his cabinet people. The dates he has available are the weekends of Feb 28-Mar 1 or Mar 7-Mar 8. Justin assures us that it will be one of those weekends.  Below are recent photos of the aquarium.  We will notify ALL HANDS of the exact date for the  "ribbon cutting ceremony" once the aquarium is installed and populated with livestock.

23 Feb 2015 "The President's Own" US Marine Band Concert

Marines:  Commandant Grisier provided this e-mail sent to him:

Good afternoon Marines,
Just wanted to pass information regarding an upcoming event by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. We are performing a concert titled "Time Capsule 1945: The 70th Anniversary of the End of World War II" on Monday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. EST. Coincidentally, that day is also the 70th anniversary of the Iwo Jima flag-raisers, so we want to pass the word to as many Marines as possible. The concert will be streaming live at Marine Band Marines so you can watch it from home on your computer (it's a sold out performance; taking place at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Md.).

Here's a description of the program and I've attached a flyer if you need it. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an email or give me a call.

Here's the flyer

The year 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the final campaign in the Pacific Theater and the end of the great Second World War. Although seven decades have passed since that turbulent time, we continue to celebrate the monumental accomplishments of the incredible men and women of our "Greatest Generation" and marvel at the enduring spirit of our country during one of its most difficult eras. It was also exactly 70 years from this concert date-on Feb. 23, 1945-that Joe Rosenthal snapped his immortal photograph of five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the flag on Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima. Come join the Marine Band and guest narrator Jim Lehrer, journalist, author, and former anchor of the PBS NewsHour, at The Music Center at Strathmore for a Time Capsule concert that celebrates the legacy of the hard fought victory of World War II and honors those who so valiantly carried the nation on their shoulders during this iconic year in American history.
