Honoring Vietnam Veterans at County Fair

The Washington Cty Fair runs from April 20 - 23 and on the 21st at 10 a.m. there will be a special ceremony to honor Vietnam Veterans.  Save room on your calendar for that day to come out to the fairgrounds to be recognized.

Also, the Vietnam display board, which will be posted all 4 days of the fair, will feature pictures of Vietnam veterans that you and I send in to the fair coordinator, Susi LaFaele.  If you have a photo or two of you in Nam or after Nam, send them through your computer to Susi's email: susi@washcofair.net.

Farewell, Steve

Sad to report this afternoon that Steve Bowers died today around 2:15 p.m.  Please remember Steve in your thoughts and prayers.

As most of you remember, Steve was an incredible caricature artist and he was known to draw pictures of Detachment members at meetings and events.

Thank you Steve for all you did as an Associate Member of the Utah Dixie Detachment.

Marine Corps Art Exhibit Feb 12-Apr 30

Honor, Courage, Commitment: Marine Corps Art, 1975-2018 is a traveling art exhibition from the National Museum of the Marine Corps and is sponsored by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. This exhibit includes 36 works by 15 combat artists, portraying Marine Corps service from the mid-1970s through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Marine Corps Combat Art Program relies on talented Marines and civilians to document the ongoing missions of the Corps. The guidance they get is simple: “Go to war and do art.” The 34 works on canvas and 2 sculptures speak to the experiences of the artists, most of whom were deployed around the globe. The show is divided among three themes: “Every Clime and Place,” which illustrates the nation’s global force in readiness—able to respond rapidly to any location; “No Better Friend, No worse Enemy,” which portrays Marines capable of fighting the enemy but also delivering aid to those in need; and “The Price,” which provides a glimpse of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform and their families make.

“The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is pleased to sponsor this exhibition,” said Major General James W. Lukeman, USMC (ret.), who serves as President and CEO of MCHF. “Not everyone is able to travel to the National Museum of the Marine Corps to see its treasures. This program enables us to share Marine Corps history—and its art—more widely.”

Upcoming Events

The traveling combat art exhibition will be on display at the St. George Art Museum from February 12 through April 30th.  The collection includes 36 works of art from the Combat Art Gallery of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.  Set aside some time to see this amazing display.

March 26 at 1100 is the dedication ceremony for the Gold Star Family monument recently constructed in Ancestor Square, St. George.  Plan to attend what is bound to be a very moving event.  90 gold star families are expected from around the county and state.

April 20 -23 is the Washington County Fair.  This year's honor to veterans will be about Vietnam, and the dedication ceremony is on April 21 at 1000. We will be discussing renting a booth space at the next staff meeting, so we may be calling on you to volunteer some time at the fair representing the Detachment in a recruitment drive.

There is a First Responder Recognition celebration planned for May 14 at the Dixie State University commons.  Preceding it is a parade Friday night the 13th. Each military organization like ours is expected to provide 2 members to help organize this event.  More information on all of these programs will come your way as I receive it.
